The Baseline
A specialty food and delicatessen retailer in Heidelberg was operating with a legacy WordPress site that had to be reworked or migrated. Beyond the outdated tech stack, the site required GDPR-compliant consent management, analytics, and had no verified search engine configuration, and no structured data. It was not functioning as a business asset and lacked discoverability in search engines and AI.
The Diagnosis
Two structural problems drove the approach. First, the WordPress infrastructure required ongoing security maintenance — plugin updates, vulnerability monitoring, hosting management — disproportionate to the site’s scope. A single-location retail shop did not need a self-hosted CMS. Second, the domain carried legacy SEO debt creating a signal mismatch that on-page optimisation alone could not resolve while those pages existed. The correct intervention was platform migration to eliminate the maintenance overhead, combined with a disavow process to clean the index — not incremental repair of the existing structure.
The Architecture
Zoho Sites Migration
Digital Zoho Sites was selected as the replacement platform: managed EU hosting, built-in DSGVO consent management, no ongoing security maintenance required, and an optional clear expansion path into the Zoho ecosystem (Campaigns, Social, Commerce, Bigin) for future phases. Site structure: Frontpage (product categories, philosophy, location, contact form), Impressum, Datenschutz. Existing brand creatives — logo, images, video — were reused and optimised for web. Domain connected with SSL. Copytext written and optimised for primary product and location keywords.
Data Google Search Console configured with sitemap submission and indexing verification. Bing Webmaster Tools set up — Bing is the index underpinning ChatGPT Search, Copilot, and Microsoft search. Structured schema data (Entity SEO) added for local business entity mapping. Google Business Profile linked to the new domain. Image compression and ALT text applied throughout. Disavow request filed for the toxic URLs from the compromised WordPress instance.
The Yield
Measured approximately 3 months post-launch (February 2025, Google Search Console):
- #1 organic ranking for dired search queries.
